Privacy policy

Smith & Nephew Plc and its group companies (together Smith & Nephew, the Company, we, our or us) will collect personally identifiable information about you in connection with the purpose and use of this website (Data). 

Your consent

By agreeing to the terms of this Privacy Policy, you consent to the collection, use, disclosure and transfer across borders of your Data as described below. Please read this Policy carefully before you agree to the terms.  Once you agree, your consent will continue to apply to our collection, use, disclosure and cross-border transfer of your personal information unless you revoke your consent by contacting us at careers@smith-nephew.com.  If you choose not to agree to the terms of this Policy, you will not be able to use the website to apply for global career opportunities with the Smith & Nephew group of companies, and we may not be able to consider you for the position for which you are applying.

Scope of this policy

This Privacy Policy applies only to information collected for recruitment purposes through this website and from other sources.  The other sources might include information that you provide other than through this website as well as information obtained, for example, from prior employers, other references, pre-employment screening providers, and other sources.  This Policy does not apply to any other site or page that we own or operate.  Our other sites have their own privacy policies.

Data processing and your user account

Smith & Nephew will use your Data for the purposes of recruiting for roles for which you apply, and seeking to provide you and us with suitable options for roles with Smith & Nephew worldwide.  You are responsible for providing information that is accurate, complete and up to date when you submit it through the online application. 

Our processing of your Data is necessary:

i) In order for Smith & Nephew to be able to enter into an employment agreement or employment relationship with you;

ii) our legitimate interests in our global recruitment activities; and

iii) your legitimate interests as a user of this website.

You can check, change and update your Data at any time by logging in to this website.

If, at any time after registering, you wish us to delete your Data, please send your request via e-mail to careers@smith-nephew.com.

We will store your Data for no longer than legally permitted for the lawful purposes for which we obtained it.  In any event, if you have not applied for a position within Smith & Nephew and there has been no activity on your profile for one (1) year, your Data will be deleted, unless applicable law establishes a shorter or longer retention period, in which case Smith & Nephew will delete your Data upon expiration of that retention period. 

We will not require you to provide information about your health, racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, trade-union membership or sexual orientation unless the law, as an exception, requires that we do so.

If the Company hires you, the Data you submitted through the online application and the information that we collect during the application process will become part of your personnel file, and may be used to administer the employment relationship and for related reporting and recordkeeping purposes.  The Company will retain this information for the duration of your employment relationship with the Company, and for as long thereafter as permitted or required by applicable law.

International transfers and data security

Smith & Nephew operates globally.  This means in connection with the purpose and use of this website, we may transfer your Data to other countries, including those outside the European Economic Area (such as the United States), but solely as permitted by applicable law and regulation (which vary from country to country).  The data protection laws in the countries where your Data may be transferred may be less stringent than the laws of your jurisdiction. 

Smith & Nephew shall adopt reasonable operational, managerial, physical and technical measures to protect your Data against accidental, unauthorised or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration, disclosure or access. 

While we strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of any information that you submit through the online application, and you do so at your own risk.  We urge you to keep your username, password and any other login credentials in a safe place as you share responsibility for maintaining the confidentiality of the information that you submit to us.  It is a good practice to sign off your account and close your browser window when you have finished your visit to our website.

Disclosure of your data to third parties

We may share your Data with third party service providers contracted that provide services, in connection with this website, on Smith & Nephew’s behalf.  These third parties may only use your Data that we provide to them as requested and instructed by Smith & Nephew, and solely in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

Smith & Nephew is responsible for the operation of this website, which is provided through a third party service provider Workday Inc. of 6230 Stoneridge Mall Road, Pleasanton, CA 94588, USA on our behalf, and for protecting the Data collected through it.

We may also share your Data in the circumstances described below:

  • When required by law, such as when we respond to subpoenas, court orders, legal process, or a discovery request;
  • If we believe that your actions violate applicable law, or threaten the rights, property, or safety of our Company, our users, or others;
  • If we sell some or all of our business, we may disclose all of the information that we have collected about you to a purchaser or, in due diligence, to a potential purchaser, but subject to a confidentiality agreement.

Smith & Nephew will make such disclosures only as permitted by applicable data protection laws.

Registration and contact details

When you register with this website, Smith & Nephew may contact you if your profile and preferences match a vacant position globally within Smith & Nephew, for as long as your profile is active on this website.

Automated decision-making and the recruitment processes

We may use automated decision-making in the recruitment process.  You may request an alternative means of decision-making, or contest an automated decision, by contacting us at careers@smith-nephew.com

In the event that you commence employment with Smith & Nephew, an alternate policy shall apply in relation to your Data, of which we will notify you.
